What is a leach line?

Leach lines, also known as the filter bed, are perforated pipes usually placed in the ground or septic chamber that move liquid from the septic tank to the ground. Any contaminants that come from the septic tank are filtered through here. Only the liquid, organic, non-toxic material ends up in the ground. It is the last step in the septic system process.

How do you know when you have a problem?

When your leach lines aren’t working right, you’ll first notice standing water where the pipes are located. It may seem like the ground is sinking when you step on it. Other things you might notice outside are:

You may notice more weeds in areas you don’t usually have grown in. This is from the soil being moister than usual, allowing for more plant growth.

The noise will sound like something is gurgling or bubbling when you use any plumbing in the home.

There will also be signs in your house if the leach lines begin to malfunction:



  • Drains will run slower than average, especially in the shower or sink. 
  • Toilets could become backed up, run slower than usual, or stop flushing thoroughly. 

When should you repair and replace it?

Because your septic system relies on a specific process to be followed to work, any disruption to that process can mean it needs to be repaired. Regular inspection and consistent pumping of the septic system can help to reduce the risk of encountering problems. If the leach lines do begin to malfunction, repairs are often manageable.

However, some of the more significant and noticeable problems outside your home, like standing water or a strange smell over the tank area, indicate that the leach lines need to be replaced. Another indicator of replacement is if there is septic waste coming up through the drains in your home.


This is a major, unsanitary problem that could cause contamination of your bathroom or kitchen areas. If appropriately maintained, leach lines can last up to 20-25 years.
